Oh, I love Water for Elephants! I feel like a lot of people didn't like it, but I was so sucked into the settings especially, with the way the book was written. It was never overly descriptive, but somehow it came across so well it was like I was there!
I find a lot of historicals published in recent memory, like certain of the books on your list, to be rather overrated. I've always tended most strongly towards classic historical fiction, published at least 30 years ago. I just have very dinosaur tastes, and there's more chances of finding a thick doorstopper historical published then as opposed to now.
