Fresh Reads Friday is something I'm going to start doing the first friday of every month and talk about my favorite debut author/book in the month before. If you want to join in, make a post and join the linky below so we can share your favorite authors too.
This month's pick:
During a diving
competition Linda discovers that she has a rare heart condition and is
told that her only hope of surviving is a heart transplant. Sensitive,
introspective, and intelligent, Linda refuses to be wrapped up in cotton
wool, despite her parent’s wishes. Determined to experience everything a
13-year-old girl should, Linda starts to work her way through a list of
all the things she and her best friend wish to do: have a first kiss,
go to a pop concert, travel without parents . . . But as Linda starts to
tick these off, a mysterious emo boy called Zak appears — and always at
the most unexpected moments. And he is happy to accompany her on daring
escapades, particularly those that her timid best friend refuses to go
on. But is Zak good or bad? And why is he the only one that Linda can
share her fears with?
Minus Me is a gripping, addictive novel — written with heart-stopping emotional honesty — from one of Norway’s most acclaimed young adult writers.

Excerpt:
A boy, slightly older than Linda, is leaning against a lamp post. The whole of him, but especially his face, is softly but clearly lit. And he's gazing straight at her. It's as if he wants something. As if he's saying come here. Just at that moment Linda feels a clamping sensation around her heart. She gasps for air,and just as the pain forces her to double up and close her eyes, she catches a last glimpse of the boy, running out into the road and towards the tram. There's a thud and the tram jolts on its way, and as it does the pain in her chest melts away as abruptly as it came. Her mittens tumble to the floor. One into a brownish pool of melted snow and grit.
I haven't read this myself yet, but I'm excited to so if anyone has an extra copy you know where to find me.
